The Anderson Varmit

In October of 1945, Anderson County was gripped by fear as reports of a strange creature—quickly dubbed the "Anderson Varmint"—circulated throughout the area. The local community grew even more alarmed when Anderson County Sheriff W.J. Erskine himself reported a personal encounter with the beast.

"The headlights of my car picked up the thing on the Portman Highway," the sheriff recounted. "It was black, short, and about five feet long." Sheriff Erskine’s sighting lent credibility to the growing number of stories, adding to the county’s unease.

The sheriff also recalled an incident involving a tourist from Texas and his wife, who had stopped at The Greasy Spoon café around 1 A.M. The couple had been shaken, with the man's wife particularly upset, claiming they had seen "something black" flash across the road just as they neared Anderson. The sheriff noted that this sighting happened on the same night that eight people, riding in two cars, reported seeing a "werewolf" stumbling down an embankment near the cemetery. Those witnesses described the creature as having a hog-like face, a chilling detail that only deepened the mystery.

Despite multiple sightings and growing fear in the community, the strange events in Anderson County were never explained, leaving the mystery of the Anderson Varmint unsolved. To this day, the strange creature remains a part of local legend, forever linked to the unsettling nights of 1945 when something wild and unknown seemed to be stalking the roads of Anderson County.
