Last Saturday night, Myrtle Beach got loud. Not tourist-trap karaoke loud—real loud. Cherry Vanilla, the city’s rising punk powerhouse, dropped their new EP Crack It Open at Fresh Brewed Coffee House, to an excited crowd. Hosted by local punk music and culture outlet Denounce Normalcy, the all-ages release show drew over 100 fans, many of whom came specifically to snag the CD. But the real story? This might be the start of a full-blown Myrtle Beach punk renaissance.
Cherry Vanilla’s Crack It Open is a fizzy cocktail of Riot Grrrl grit and punk hooks. It evokes the spirit of Hole, 7 Year Bitch, and even the Beastie Boys’ early NY hardcore days. Lead singer 'Miss Vanilla' the angst and attitude of the '90s with a voice that could’ve easily torn through CBGB in ’77. The EP doesn’t just sound authentic—it feels revolutionary.
The release show featured a stacked lineup of local talent:
LunchBox Hero Newgrounds, Molting, Death Rugby, all rounded out the night keeping the crowd moving, but Cherry Vanilla was the cherry on top—literally. Fans lined up for the CD, some admitting they hadn't bought a CD in years.
Myrtle Beach has a rich musical history. In the '80s and '90s, bands like The Accelerators and The Blue Dogs carved out a local legacy. But as tourism grew, the scene shifted toward cover bands and beach-friendly sets designed to entertain rather than challenge. The raw, original energy of Myrtle Beach music faded into the background.
Cherry Vanilla’s emergence—and Denounce Normalcy’s platform—could mark a turning point. This isn’t just a band. It’s a wave of change. A reminder that Myrtle Beach isn’t just for sunburns and saltwater taffy and Jimmy Buffet. Cherry Vanilla is going to put Myrtle Beach back on the map—not for tourists, but for music.
Whether you're a punk purist, a nostalgic local, or just someone tired of hearing “Sweet Caroline” on repeat, Cherry Vanilla is your antidote. And if Retro Myrtle Beach Guy’s instincts are right, this band is about to become the face of a Myrtle Beach music revival.
