(MYRTLE BEACH)  The Grand Strand's film-making community met Friday night in a sign of the up an coming film industry in Myrtle Beach! Seasoned professionals, upcoming directors, aspiring screenplay writers and more from the Myrtle Beach Film Community (MBFC) met Friday afternoon at downtown's Fresh Brewed Coffee House to discuss future plans, and to network.

Myrtle Beach has been the setting and subject of many movies and shows over the years from the legendary 'Shag' about college girl's on a trip to Myrtle Beach in the 60s in search of some fun and hanky panky, to East Bound and Down and Righteous Gemstones in modern times.  While these films often showcase Myrtle Beach, the city has yet to establish a local film scene or industry in any serious capacity, but that may be about to change!

Myrtle Beach... has yet to establish a local film scene or industry in any serious capacity, but that may be about to change!

Last year saw the release of 'Retro Myrtle Beach Guy: The Movie' which has been screened in film festivals all over the world and is already bringing home awards.  The flm has been highlighted in media internationally and production company Speinsted and Ederpt is already making a name for itself in the indie movie scene, and now with a second film in and about Myrtle Beach Mint Jelly in the works, it seems like the time is ripe for expanding the local film community.

With audiences shying away from blockbusters and theaters as in years past and the availability of technology, the opportunity for small filmmakers to flex their creative muscles and to actually have their work seen is unlike any time in history!  No longer does the eager director have to lure viewers to a cineplex, but instead they can simply click on a link and watch a movie from their phone anywhere!

This cozy but precarious situation has left Hollywood woefully unprepared for competition, and the eager movie buff in a prime position not only to get noticed but to highlight a whole region and create new opportunities for storytellers to showcase their perspectives.

These filmmakers are counting on this being their chance to get their films in front of audiences in a way never before possible, and with audiences growing evermore weary of remakes, reboots, sequels, and superhero CGI fests, people are looking for stories and new ways to see the world.

Will Myrtle Beach look back on tonight as the night the film industry on the Grand Strand was born?  Only time will tell.

The group is planning on meeting again soon and grow!
